Founded in 1062, Marrakech was the capital of Almoravides dynasty and, in the 12th century, the capital of Almohades dynasty. The city later thrived under the rule of the Saadian dynasty, who chose their residence in Marrakesh, and the city became an important trade centre in the Sahara . After the French occupation, the modern part of the city was built in 1913.
